Set in New York in the 1890’s. Dolly Gallagher Levi, has been engaged by the wealthy Yonkers grain merchant Horace Vandergelder, to ‘match-make’ for him. He has chosen Irene Malloy, a young widow and hat shop owner. However Dolly has other ideas and is intent on saving Horace for her very own!
Meanwhile, his two assistants Cornelius and Barnaby, have escaped the drudgery of Vandergelder’s store for the evening. They are looking for young ladies to share a night on the town, and vow that will not go home “ until they’ve kissed a girl”. On catching sight of their employer, they hide in the hat shop and meet Irene. Cornelius falls instantly in love with her, while Barnaby is very attracted to her shop assistant Minnie Fay.
Horace makes his way to the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, as does Dolly, where she receives a rapturous welcome by the staff. It turns out that the young assistants and their guests are also dining there. It all gets very frenetic and the law gets involved; some of the protagonists find themselves temporarily behind bars.
Later, back at Horace’s grain store, it takes a little time for Dolly to convince Horace that they ‘ are made for each other’, and with similar romantic alliances by the youngsters, it all ends very happily.
Hello Dolly is a musical comedy dream, with a splendid mixture of touching romance, humour rich in both colour and content.
It is beautifully scored and highlights include the title song Hello Dolly with the singing and dancing waiters, there are also many other memorable songs such as ‘Before the Parade passes by’ , ‘Ribbons down my back’ and ‘ So long Dearie’.
